Week 5

Facebook:
Facebook is one of my favorite Web 2.0 sites.  It allows people to be connected to each other at the click of a button.  Facebook is an easy access website and is easily navigated.  You can talk to people, find new people, connect with old friends, etc.  It is great for social networking.

iTunes:
iTunes is another of my favorite Web 2.0 sites.  I love to listen to music, and you can find any type of music and applications that you could ever want or need.  It allows me to access my music at any time and I can easily access applications that help me organize my life or just waste time.

Week 4

Graphing Tools:
I would use Microsoft Excel in my classroom to allow students to create graphs.  One way to incorporate this is to have students graph daily information, such as the weather.  At the end of the month, they could print their graph out to put in their science journals.

Planning and Organization:
Students can use concept map software to create an outline for a paper they are writing or to brainstorm about a topic.

Week 3

Types of Software:

Drill and Practice:  http://www.aplusmath.com/.  This website provides flash card drill and practice for students to use in various math areas.
Tutorial: http://www.starfall.com/.  This website is a great site for young students.  It provides them with information on learning letters and sounds.  It also helps beginning readers.
Simulation: http://www.seeds2lrn.com/rocketSoftware.html.  This website provides students with a simulation of water rockets.  They can input information and create their own simulation.
Instructional Games: http://www.mathplayground.com/.  This website provides great practice for students needing help in math.  They are able to practice various skills in a fun, interactive way.
Problem Solving: Crazy Machines 2 is educational software that allows students to practice their problem solving skills to navigate their way through a puzzle.
Integrated Learning Systems: SuccessMaker is software for students that allows them to use software that is targeted for their level and content.

Week 2

Technology in education is affected my many issues.  Some of those reasons include cultural, economical, and technical changes.  Many students do not have access to technology because of economical reasons.  Students who come from low-income areas often do not have the opportunity to have access online or even to a computer.  Also, the rapid changes in technology often prove impossible to keep up with.  The access to this technology is often difficult for schools to obtain because of expenses, and when it is obtained, there is always something new coming out that is bigger and better.  Finally, cultural differences show us that we need to consider our students' backgrounds when considering technology.  It can be a great asset to the classroom, but cultural differences need to be addressed.

The history of education has taught us that teachers will always be important to the classroom.  Even though we are leaning more and more on distance education, there is still a vital role played by the teacher in the classroom.  The connection made with students through personal interaction shows us that we will always need teachers in the classroomm.  It has also taught us that change is impossible to keep up with.  No matter how hard we try, we will always be a step behind the ever changing technology.  We should strive to keep up, but we will never be able to have all the latest tools and gadgets.  Finally, we have learned that older technologies can be useful.  Even though technology is ever changing, the technologies developed in the past can still be helpful in various ways.

Week 1

My name is Jonathon Lacy.  I live in Falkville, Alabama.  I am the physical education teacher at Lacey's Spring Elementary/Junior High School.  I am also the football and basketball coach.  I hope to finish my master's some time next year.  My goal is to complete my degree in physical education and learn more ideas for teaching my students.  Because I have such a wide age group, I need ideas for teaching students from five years to fourteen year olds.  I also hope to become more proficient in the use of technology for my students.  My favorite technology would be the invention of gaming systems that allow you to connect to the internet and play people from anywhere.
